Theth is the reason people go north. A scattered village of stone houses and guesthouses in a valley surrounded by peaks, with a waterfall, a natural pool called the Blue Eye, and the trailhead for the hike over the pass to Valbona.

It is simple, cool even in August, and a complete change from the coast.

Getting there

Minibuses leave Shkodër around 7 am and take about three hours. Book through your Shkodër guesthouse the day before. Most people do the loop: Theth, hike to Valbona, then the Komani Lake ferry and minibus back to Shkodër.

Theth: common questions

Can I drive to Theth?
Yes, the road from Shkodër is now paved all the way. It is narrow and winding, so a small car is better than a big one, and winter closures are common.
How hard is the Theth to Valbona hike?
About 17 km with roughly 1,000 m of ascent over the pass, 6 to 8 hours for most people. It is well marked and there are huts selling drinks along the way, but it is a proper mountain day.
