Berat is the place that makes people fall for Albania. Two old quarters, Mangalem and Gorica, face each other across the Osum river, with rows of white Ottoman houses and their famous windows climbing the slopes. Above them sits Kala, a castle where families still live inside the walls.

It is small. You can see the highlights in a day, but staying a night in an old-town guesthouse is the point.

What to do

Walk up to the castle in the late afternoon, visit the Onufri icon museum inside, and come down through Mangalem for dinner. With a second day, drive or take a tour to Osum Canyon and the Bogovë waterfall.

Berat: common questions

Is Berat or Gjirokastër better?

Both are UNESCO Ottoman towns and both are worth it. Berat is easier from Tirana and more photogenic from a distance; Gjirokastër has the bigger castle and sits on the way to the south coast. If you drive the classic loop, you can do both.

How do I get to Berat from Tirana?

Buses leave from Tirana's South and North Terminal roughly every hour and take about 2.5 hours. By car it is around 2 hours.
