Plan Your Trip to Albania

Start here if this is your first time. Each section gives you the short answer and links to the full guide when you need the detail.

When to Visit

May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, open beach bars, no July/August crowds or prices. Winter is quiet and mild on the coast, but many Riviera places close.

Where to Go

First trip? Tirana plus the southern coast (Sarandë, Ksamil, Himarë) is the classic loop. Add Berat or Gjirokastër for UNESCO towns, or the Alps (Theth, Valbona) if you like hiking.

How Long to Stay

A week covers Tirana and the Riviera without rushing. Ten days lets you add Berat and Gjirokastër. Two weeks gets you the Alps too. Three or four days is enough for a city break plus one coastal stop.

Travel Costs

Albania is one of the cheapest countries in Europe, but the Riviera in August is not. Realistic mid-range budgets, meal prices, rental and fuel costs.

Getting Around

Buses and furgons (minibuses) reach most places cheaply but on their own schedule. A rental car is the easiest way to see the coast and mountains.

Car Rental

What full insurance really covers, why the cheapest online price is rarely the final price, and what to photograph before you drive off.

Accommodation

Family-run guesthouses and apartments dominate. Book ahead for July and August on the coast; the rest of the year you can be spontaneous.

SIM & Internet

Vodafone and One sell tourist SIMs with lots of data for a week or two. An eSIM is easier if you land late. Wi-Fi is good almost everywhere.

Money

The currency is the lek (ALL). Cards work in cities and bigger hotels, but small restaurants, beach bars, buses and many guesthouses are cash only. Withdraw from bank ATMs, not Euronet.

Safety

Albania is safe for tourists, including solo travellers. The real risks are the roads and the sun, not crime.

Travel Insurance

Albania is outside the EU, so an EHIC/GHIC card is no use. Get a policy that covers medical care and, if you drive, the rental excess.
