Rozafa Castle, pedestrian centre

Shkodër is Albania at a slower pace: a flat, pedestrian-friendly centre, more bicycles than anywhere else in the country, and a castle on a hill with views over the lake to Montenegro. Most visitors are here on their way to the mountains, but it is worth a proper evening.

The Alps from Shkodër

The classic route is Shkodër to Theth by minibus, a one-day hike over the Valbona Pass, a night in Valbona, then the Komani Lake ferry back. Guesthouses in town arrange the whole thing.

Shkodër: common questions

Do I need to stay in Shkodër to visit Theth?
Most people do. Minibuses to Theth leave Shkodër early in the morning, and the Komani Lake ferry to Valbona starts before dawn from a dock north of the city. Guesthouses in Shkodër will book both for you.
