Sarandë vs Ksamil: Which Should You Choose?
Twenty minutes apart and completely different. One has the beaches, the other has everything else. Here is how to decide, and why many people end up using both.

This is the most common question we see from people planning Albania’s south coast, and the honest answer is that they are different products. Sarandë is a town. Ksamil is a beach resort that grew out of a village. Twenty minutes separate them, and most people who visit one end up in the other at some point.

Beaches
Ksamil wins, clearly. The water is the reason it is famous: shallow, turquoise and calm, with three small islands you can swim or pedal-boat to. The beaches themselves are small and, from June onwards, almost entirely covered by sunbeds belonging to the beach bars. Expect to pay €10 to €30 for two beds and an umbrella. Walk south along the coast and it gets quieter.
Sarandë’s town beaches are fine for a swim after dinner but nothing you would travel for. The good beaches near Sarandë are outside town: Mirror Beach (Pasqyra) and Pulëbardha to the south, both pebbly with clear water and far fewer people than Ksamil. You need a car or taxi for those.
Accommodation
Sarandë has hundreds of hotels and apartments across every price range, most on the hillside with sea views. It is also where you will find the best value on the south coast, especially outside July and August. Stairs are the trade-off: the town is steep.
Ksamil is mostly apartments and small family-run hotels, often a few minutes from the water. The choice is smaller and prices in high season are noticeably higher. Book well ahead for July and August; for June and September a couple of weeks is enough.
Food and nightlife
Sarandë has a long promenade of restaurants, cafés and bars, a handful of clubs in summer, and enough choice to eat somewhere different every night. Prices are reasonable and there are good seafood places if you avoid the ones with photo menus.
Ksamil is quieter. Beach bars cover the day, a few decent restaurants cover the evening, and by 11 pm most of the village is asleep. If you want to go out, you go to Sarandë.
Getting there and around
Sarandë is the transport hub of the south. Buses to Tirana, Gjirokastër, Vlorë, Himarë and Ksamil, plus the ferry to Corfu, all leave from here. If you arrive by ferry or bus and do not have a car, it is the natural base.
Ksamil is on one bus line: Sarandë to Butrint via Ksamil, every 30 to 60 minutes in summer. That covers the beach and the ruins, and that is it. With a car, Ksamil is as easy as anywhere.

Atmosphere
Sarandë feels like a real Albanian seaside town: a bit rough around the edges, busy, with locals and tourists mixed. Ksamil feels like a beach resort that fills up completely for two months and half-empties for the rest of the year. Neither is pretty in the way Himarë or Dhërmi is, but both are functional and friendly.
Prices

Day trips
From either base you can reach Butrint (UNESCO ruins), the Blue Eye spring, Gjirokastër and Corfu. Sarandë has more tour operators and the ferry; Ksamil is closer to Butrint. From Sarandë you can also head north to Himarë and the Riviera for the day.
Who should choose Sarandë
- You are travelling without a car.
- You want choice in restaurants, bars and hotels.
- You are on a budget or visiting in August.
- You want a base for day trips or the Corfu ferry.
- You are a family with older kids who get bored of one beach.
Who should choose Ksamil
- The beach and the water are the main event.
- You are visiting in June, early July or September.
- You want a quiet evening and an early morning swim.
- You have a car, or you are happy on one bus line.
- It is a short stay: two or three nights.
Our verdict
If we had to pick one for a first visit, it would be Sarandë as the base with days in Ksamil, because it gives you the beaches without the compromises. If it is a beach-only trip in June or September, book Ksamil and do not overthink it. Whatever you do, avoid Ksamil in August unless crowds are part of the fun for you.
